Vision Restoring Surgical Kit
Vision Restoring Surgical Kit for Macular Degeneration
Despite advances in drug treatments, macular degeneration remains the leading cause of blindness in people over 50, resulting in gradual loss of the abilities to read, drive, or recognize faces. “You can restore vision to the macula if you bring it a nutrient level, sub-retinal tissue that’s not damaged,” says Dr. Timothy Olsen, F. Phinizy Calhoun Sr. Professor of Ophthalmology and director of the Emory Eye Center. His team worked with mechanical engineers to design a support structure to transplant a thin circle of healthy tissue, like a skin graft, from under the retina’s periphery to the macular “bull’s eye."
