AcµRay: A Modular, Point-of-Care Diagnostic Device

Early detection of disease is important for successful treatment outcomes, but most tests are highly invasive, time-consuming, expensive, and must be performed by a highly skilled laboratory technician. Point of Care Testing (POCT) is diagnostic testing that does not require a specialized lab, allowing rapid test results. However, POCT devices are not prevalent partly because most equipment is designed for a single purpose, requiring clinics to purchase numerous devices to cover the range of diagnostic tests performed. Emory and Georgia Tech researchers developed AcµRay, a diagnostic system designed to perform any biomarker diagnostic test using the same procedure and device. This simplicity allows for a single clinic to perform a wide range of diagnostic tests quickly and accurately without the need to learn and maintain numerous testing devices.
